You can sometimes get cheap flights to Edinburgh at the end of the school holiday season. Scotland and England take their summer vacations at different times of the year. Scotland typically starts its school year earlier than they do in England. This can create a window for bookings (late August) where Scotland's summer break is over, but England's is not. 

During these windows, demand may be lower at EDI airport. You may be able to book yourself a great deal on a cheap flight to or from Edinburgh airport, compared to the prices you would get in London or other UK airports. The opposite can be true at the beginning of the summer holiday break.

There are express bus routes that will take you from the airport to the main city centre. The main airport express bus route is the Airlink 100. It runs every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Tickets cost under 10 GBP and it has an expected transit time of about 25 minutes. There are other airport express bus routes from the airport, but the Airlink 100 is the fastest route from the airport to Waverly Bridge, at the city centre.

Taking the tram can be another good option. Tram services run every 7-10 minutes at the airport, between 7am-7pm. The expected transit time to reach the city is about 35 minutes. Tickets cost under 10 GBP each.

Taxi ranks are also available at the airport on a 24/7 basis. The travel time to reach the city is between 25-35 minutes at an expected cost of between 25 and 40 GBP.
