Volaris’s operating bases
Volaris operates under a low-cost model with point-to-point flights. This removes the need to organize transit for passengers as the airline does not offer connecting flights. Instead, it serves various routes from its several bases in Mexico.
The largest one is Mexico City (MEX). It's the airline’s gateway for more than 25 domestic and most international flights.
Other big operating bases are the airports in
Tijuana (TIJ): A base in northwestern Mexico, useful for U.S.‑Mexico traffic.
Guadalajara (GDL): A base serving western Mexico as well as routes to the USA.
Smaller bases are Monterrey (MTY), Cancún (CUN), León/Del Bajío (BJX), Mexicali (MXL), and Culiacán (CUL).
Domestic direct flights with Volaris
Volaris offers over 125 unique direct routes within Mexico and is the airline with the most passengers carried in the country.
Volaris connects its bases, as well as many smaller airports in the country. On more than 45 of those routes, it is the only airline serving them.
Aeroméxico, the flag carrier, serves more domestic destinations but provides fewer flights in total. On the other side, Viva is the other major low-cost airline with lots of destinations within Mexico.
Top examples of busy domestic routes that Volaris offers include:
Mexico City (MEX) - Guadalajara (GDL): Connecting Volaris’s two largest hubs 4-5 times per day.
Mexico City (MEX) - Cancún (CUN): A high-demand leisure flight route to Mexico’s foremost seaside resort town.
Guadalajara (GDL)- Tijuana (TIJ): Volaris’s busiest domestic routes.
Tijuana (TIJ) - Mexico City (MEX): A low-cost option for traveling between the capital and the northwest provinces.
Monterrey (MTY) - Guadalajara (GDL): 5 flights daily.
Volaris’s direct flights to the United States
Volaris operates a broad US-Mexico cross-border network, serving over 20 American cities, including major hubs like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Orlando, and New York.
The airline is a major player in the market for flights between Mexico and the USA, capturing around 15% of the market share. This puts it in third place overall, behind US carriers American Airlines with 25% and United Airlines with 16%.
Still, Volaris manages to carve a unique position by serving around 40 routes that no other airline offers. Some of those include:
Guadalajara (GDL) - Ontario (ONT): Two flights per day to a secondary airport serving the LA area.
Morelia (MLM) - Los Angeles (LAX): One flight per day.
Leon/Guanajuato (BJX) - Oakland (OAK): Five flights per week.
Guadalajara (GDL) - Reno (RNO): Five flights per week.
All the direct routes above are only served by Volaris.
