Vietnam Airlines’ hubs and operating bases
Vietnam Airlines has two primary hubs and one secondary hub, unsurprisingly the three busiest airports in the country.
Hanoi Noi Bai Airport (HAN): The northern hub near the Vietnamese capital from where the airline offers more than 45 direct routes.
Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN): The southern hub, near Vietnam’s largest city, with 50+ nonstop destinations.
Da Nang International Airport (DAD): A secondary hub for the airline, located in Central Vietnam. Vietnam Airlines is quickly expanding operations from DAD to meet growing international demand.
Vietnam Airlines also has two focus cities in Cambodia - Phnom Penh (PNH) and Siem Reap (SAI), from where it serves regional fifth-freedom flights.
Domestic direct flights
Vietnam Airlines is the largest domestic airline in the country and has the most weekly routes and flights. It flies to all major and minor airports in Vietnam.
Another major player domestically is the low-cost carrier Vietjet Air.
Here are Vietnam Airlines’ busiest domestic routes:
Hanoi (HAN) - Ho Chi Minh City (SGN): Vietnam’s busiest route and one of the world’s busiest domestic routes by seats sold. VN operates up to 24 flights per day with greatly increased capacity during the annual Tết celebrations.
Hanoi (HAN) - Da Nang (DAD): Up to 17 flights per day between the two major cities.
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) - Da Nang (DAD): Another key domestic corridor.
Hanoi (HAN) - Nha Trang (CXR): 4 flights per day to this coastal resort.
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) - Phu Quoc (PQC): A popular route to Vietnam’s famous tourist island. You can also fly to Phu Quoc from Hanoi and Can Tho.
Direct flights to the United States
Vietnam Airlines launched its first direct flight to the USA in 2021. This is still the only route, although the airline has ambitious plans to launch more non-stop services to North America, such as Seattle and New York.
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) - San Francisco (SFO): Service is 4 times per week. The flight takes approximately 14-15 hours using Airbus A350-900. It’s currently the airline’s longest flight.
Vietnam Airlines’ growing international network
Vietnam Airlines flies to more than 25 countries. While its most frequent services are those to neighboring countries in ASEAN, it also emphasizes direct flights to important tourist markets like Japan, Australia, and select countries in Europe.
Here are some of the airline’s most popular international flights.
Hanoi (HAN) - Tokyo Narita (NRT): Daily service to the Japanese capital.
Hanoi (HAN) - Singapore (SIN): 1 flight per day to Southeast Asia’s busiest airport and global hub.
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) - London Heathrow (LHR): The airline’s second-longest flight, served 3 times per week.
Hanoi (HAN) - Sydney (SYD): Vietnam Airlines provides frequent direct flights to Australia. Other cities connected by a nonstop service include Melbourne and Perth.
Hanoi (HAN) - Paris (CDG): One flight per day to the heart of Europe. Vietnam Airlines is the only airline serving this route.
