Japan Airlines (commonly known as JAL, IATA: JL) is Japan’s flag carrier and the second largest airline in Japan. It is a member of Oneworld. JAL’s hubs and operating bases
Japan Airlines has two primary hubs in Tokyo and two secondary hubs in Osaka:
Tokyo Narita (NRT): Long considered the international gateway of Japan, Narita sees the most direct flights to/from abroad.
Tokyo Haneda (HND): Handles much of Tokyo’s domestic air traffic but also a lot of international flights.
Osaka Kansai (KIX): A secondary hub in Japan’s second largest city with a focus on international flights, although increasingly serving domestic ones too.
Osaka Itami (ITM): Also a secondary hub, but a strictly domestic airport.
Domestic direct flights with Japan Airlines
JAL offers intensive domestic routes servicing Japan’s major cities:
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Sapporo New Chitose (CTS): JAL’s busiest route with 17 flights per day.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Fukuoka (FUK): Also 17 flights daily to the largest city on Kyushu.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Osaka Itami (ITM): An important domestic route with 15 daily flights, that competes with the bullet trains (Shinkansen) overland.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Kagoshima (KOJ): 8 flights per day to southern Kyushu.
Sapporo New Chitose (CTS) - Hakodate (HKD): A route unique to JAL. 5-7 daily flights on this short, 40-minute flight in Hokkaido.
In total, Japan Airlines offers more than 100 unique routes within Japan, of which over 40 are unique to the airline, i.e., no other airline serves them.
Direct flights to the United States with All Nippon Airways
JAL operates daily direct flights to the United States from four airports in Japan. The airline serves 10 cities in the US: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Honolulu, and Kailua-Kona.
JAL offers more direct flights to the US than All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline.
Here are JAL’s busiest direct routes to the US:
Tokyo Narita (NRT) - Honolulu (HNL): Operated year-round, twice-daily in the summer and once per day during the winter months. JAL also flies from Narita to Kailua-Kona and to Honolulu from Haneda and Nagoya too.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - New York (JFK): Twice-daily service, year-round. Currently, the airline’s longest flight to the USA.
Tokyo Narita (NRT) - Boston (BOS): JAL offers 1 flight per day from Narita and is the only airline on this route.
Tokyo Narita (NRT) - San Diego (SAN): Another route unique to the airline. One flight daily.
Osaka Kansai (KIX) - Los Angeles (LAX): One of the few direct routes to the USA from Osaka.
Japan Airlines’ global reach
JAL operates direct flights to 4 continents. Besides the USA, its main markets include countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Some of JAL’s most popular long-haul flights include:
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Paris (CDG): A daily flight between the two capitals. Currently, the airline’s longest flight at just under 15 hours in the sky.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Helsinki (HEL): Even with Russian airspace closed off for JAL (and Finnair, the other airline serving the route), it is still a popular 5-times-weekly service.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Doha, Qatar (DOH): After Qatar Airways ended the route in March of 2025, JAL remained the sole carrier. It was the first Japanese airline to open direct flights to the Middle East just 1 year prior.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) - Sydney (SYD): Two flights per day to Australia’s largest airport.
Tokyo Narita (NRT) - Vancouver (YVR): JAL’s only direct flight to Canada. Operated once per day.
JAL flies to more than 35 countries.
