Ethiopian Airlines’ hubs and operating bases
Ethiopian Airlines is headquartered and primarily operates from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD).
This hub has a central location both within Ethiopia and within Africa, making many short- and long-haul flights economically viable. This allows Ethiopian Airlines to provide one of the most extensive intra-continental networks.
ADD handles upwards of 400 flights per day, with more than half of those served by Ethiopian.
Secondary hubs include Lomé in Togo, Lilongwe in Malawi, and Lusaka in Zambia. These are used primarily to support Ethiopian’s regional network.
Ethiopian Airlines' domestic direct flights
As the flag carrier and largest airline in the country, Ethiopian Airlines is the foremost provider of direct domestic flights.
It connects the capital to pretty much all commercial airports in Ethiopia and provides frequent flights linking the different population centers.
Some of ET’s key domestic routes include:
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Bahir Dar (BJR): The most frequent domestic city pair, linking the capital to the Blue Nile region. Ethiopian provides up to 15 flights daily.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Mekelle (MQX): A vital route to Ethiopia’s northern region, with 9 flights daily.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Dire Dawa (DIR): A link to eastern Ethiopia with up to 8 flights per day.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Gondar (GDQ): Connecting the capital to the culture and tourism hotspot in the northwest with 35 flights per week.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Hawassa (AWA): A route to the Southern Nations state with a frequency of 3 flights per day.
Direct flights to the United States with Ethiopian Airlines
Due to the peculiar science of aviation and Addis Ababa's unique geography, it is not possible to operate a direct flight from Addis Ababa to the USA with the current commercial aircraft. The Ethiopian capital lies at a high altitude, which means that the air is less dense and long-haul airplanes need to depart with less fuel. This limits their range, necessitating stopovers.
Return flights from the USA to Ethiopia are not limited in the same way, so there are indeed non-stop flights straight into Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian Airlines uses three main airports for stopovers en route to the USA: Rome (FCO), Abidjan (ABJ), and Lome (LFW). There is no change in aircraft during these stopovers, so the flights are indeed direct, but not non-stop.
Here is a list of some of Ethiopian Airlines' direct flights to the USA. Note that these flights do not pick up passengers at the stopover airport.
Addis Ababa - Rome (FCO) - Washington Dulles (IAD): Ethiopian offers a daily flight to the American capital. Washington has the largest Ethiopian American community in the USA.
Addis-Ababa - Rome (FCO) - Chicago (ORD): Also a daily service, year-round.
Addis Ababa - Rome (FCO) - Atlanta (ATL): Ethiopian provides 4 flights each week to the world’s busiest airport.
Addis Ababa - Lome (LFW) - New York Newark (EWR): Four flights per week with a stopover in Togo, proceeding to the US’s largest city.
Addis Ababa - Abidjan (ABJ) - New York (JFK): A popular thrice-weekly service with a stopover in Cote d'Ivoire, proceeding to New York’s primary airport.
Ethiopian’s impressive global network of direct flights
Ethiopian Airlines covers extensive international markets with regular and strategic flights. Notable nonstop routes:
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Dubai (DXB): Three daily flights to the busiest airport in the Middle East and a key transit hub.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Johannesburg (JNB): Three scheduled daily services on an important Pan‑African route, where Ethiopian is the only provider.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - London Heathrow (LHR): A daily A350 service linking Africa to Europe’s premier hub. Ethiopian currently has a monopoly on the route.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Beijing Capital (PEK): One flight per day to the Chinese capital.
Addis Ababa (ADD) - Mumbai (BOM): Up to 14 weekly flights allowing diaspora flows in each direction.
By continuously adding more destinations in new countries and investing in new aircraft, Ethiopian Airways has managed to become one of the most well-connected airlines in the world.
